PROCESS FOR PAPER CONSERVATION
The study carried out in a research institute from Iasi - Romania describes an ecological process for conservation and consolidation of old paper documents belonging to cultural heritage. The process consists of the paper conservation by decontamination and coating with a thin polymer film in high frequency plasma conditions. The technology can be applied in other domains: the synthesis of polymers, surface modifications, medicine. We are interested in collaboration / technical cooperation with research institutions and Museums.
The process is proposed in order to eliminate the classic treatments realized with toxic substances. The degree of project novelty consists in the elaboration of a technology in the cultural heritage conservation, for decontamination and coating of paper artifacts, in the conditions of high frequency plasma.
The technology is highly efficient, ecological and non-destructive with low specific consumptions. The realization of protective coatings by cold plasma deposit directly from monomer phase entails the advantages of a well- defined structure and composition of the deposed film, a better characteristic control and a better homogeneity of the material properties. Moreover, the cold plasma treatment allows a superior preparation of the paper surface by decontamination which determines an excellent adherence of the coating material to the support, and a true reproduction of the details.
